These easy 4th of July Fruit Skewers are a festive red, white and blue snack made with watermelon, mozzarella and blueberries on a silver star skewer. Drizzle with balsamic glaze if desired for a tasty twist. This is the perfect patriotic appetizer for summer parties!

I recently made an amazing melon and prosciutto salad, and fell in love with the flavor combination. Looking at the ingredients I realized I could make an easy and healthy red white and blue snack with my leftover watermelon, mozzarella and blueberries. This works well as a patriotic appetizer for holidays such as 4th of July, Memorial Day or Labor Day.

Red, White and Blue Fruit Skewer Ingredients
It really doesn’t get more simple than the ingredients in this red, white and blue appetizer.
- seedless watermelon
- mozzarella balls
- blueberries
- balsamic glaze (optional)
I used BelGioioso Fresh Mozzarella Snacking Cheese that I picked up from Aldi. The 6 count package has a total of of 18 mozzarella balls. You find this product at Walmart as well. You can also buy the mozzarella pearls, but they are slightly smaller.

I stuck to traditional red, white and blue but you play around with different ingredients. Here are just a few ideas:
- Include fresh herbs like a mint or basil leaf.
- Add a layer of prosciutto or salami.
- Swap out the watermelon for a tomato or strawberry. (The skewer will need to lie flat.)
You’ll also need a skewer. I used these Silver Star Cupcake Toppers that I picked up a few years ago from Amazon. While they say cupcake toppers, they are a little tall for a standard cupcake. However, they make a great star skewer! Alternatively, you could choose a standard fruit skewer made from wood or bamboo.
How to Make 4th of July Fruit Skewers
There are not a lot of steps to make this fruit kabob. To start, you’ll need to make your melon balls. You can use a melon baller or small cookie scoop. I like to use this small metal coffee scoop that I’ve had for years.

Press it down into the fruit and give it a nice rotation to make a ball shape. If you’ve never done this before you can see it in action here.

Now it is time to assemble. Place two blueberries that have been washed and gently dried onto your skewer.

Next add your mozzarella cheese.

Place your skewer into the watermelon ball with the flat side down if you want it to stand up. Be sure to not go all the way through.

If you’d rather display your red, white and blue fruit skewers lying down, I recommend placing the flat side against the mozzarella and the rounded side down so it faces out.

For a cleaner look, avoid poking the wooden skewer through the bottom.

Just before serving, drizzle with a little balsamic glaze to add additional sweetness, tang and depth to your fruit appetizer. It elevates the simple ingredients, but can be skipped if you aren’t a fan or want to appeal to all ages.

While this is a very simple fruit skewer idea, it is a fun way to add a festive touch to any summer gathering including picnics, cookouts, and potlucks. With the red, white and blue theme it can be your go-to appetizer or snack for 4th of July or other patriotic holidays.

You can substitute cherry tomatoes or a strawberry for the watermelon.
