Drop biscuits are the best biscuits! We all have our favorite recipes from scratch that are our go-to favorites. These homemade drop biscuits have been a family favorite for years. I love that they are made from ingredients that I always have on hand, and can be on my table in under 20 minutes. These biscuits are the perfect accompaniment to a hearty winter meal like stew, but also taste great warmed up with my morning coffee. One thing is for certain, you won’t believe how easy these drop biscuits with no yeast are to make!
Drop Biscuit Recipe Ingredients:
To make these easy drop biscuits, you’ll need the following simple ingredients:
- flour: all-purpose flour
- baking powder: Yes, you really do need a tablespoon. If your baking powder is not fresh, your biscuits may be flatter.
- sugar: How much sugar you want, will really depend on your personal preference and how you plan to serve the biscuits.
- salt: Just standard table salt. I have not tested this recipe using another type of salt such as sea salt, kosher salt, etc.
- butter: I use unsalted butter. I recommend giving it a chance to cool slightly after melting it for best results.
- milk: I have made this recipe with 1%, 2% and whole milk and whole milk really does make the best biscuit. You can also try using a lower fat milk and replacing some of the amount with half and half or heavy whipping cream to add a bit more fat in, but I haven’t tested this.
How to Make Drop Biscuits
To make these easy drop biscuits, preheat your oven to 450 degrees Fahrenheit. Yes that is hot, but your biscuits will only be baking for about 10 minutes. I recommend not starting on making your biscuits until your oven is almost preheated.
Melt your butter in a small dish. Let cool slightly. Mix together flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Add in melted butter and milk. Stir just until moistened. Immediately drop biscuits on a lightly greased or lined baking sheet. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes or until tops and edges are golden brown.
To make the perfect biscuits every time, I recommend always using a quality lined baking sheet like the one below. I love using silicone baking mats because they can be used over and over again and clean up great! Together they made a gorgeous biscuit bottom without burning. I like using a muffin (4 tablespoon) steel scoop. This is a must have for quickly dropping the biscuits plus it works great for large cookies or filling tins for muffins or cupcakes!

Serve these homemade drop biscuits with butter, honey, jam, apple butter or great for dipping into soups. We especially love them with butter and honey. Would also taste great with some fruit mixed in, like this cranberry biscuit. or more savory like these cheesy biscuits. Super simple and very delicious!
Drop Biscuit Tips:
After making this recipe so many times, I’ve learned a very tips along the way that I’m happy to share with you. For best results in this recipe:
- Preheat your oven immediately: You do not want this batter to sit while waiting for the oven to finish preheating.
- Do not over mix: Mix your dough, just until fully moistened and combined.
- Work fast: The sooner you get them into the oven after you mix the wet ingredients in with the dry, the better the taste.
- Whole milk: I’ve found that whole milk creates a better biscuit over 1% milk. They do taste great either way, but the extra fat does make them even better.
- Use a silicone baking sheet or parchment paper: This creates the perfect biscuit bottoms and avoids any sticking.

Great recipe! Thank you. Super easy to make; using simple ingredients and takes a short amount of time to make them. They are super delicious too. My toddler loved them and so did my husband. It is going to be my go to recipe from now on. Thank you so much!
I made this and it came out like pancake batter! I even went over the ingredients 3 times to make sure I did it right! I ended up having to add double the flour and making a ton of biscuits in order to make it work. With that much liquid butter and milk, its way too much
Kasey, I’m sorry to hear that you are having trouble. This is a well tested recipe I’ve made several dozen times and it has never turned out like pancake batter and has always resulted in delicious biscuits (except for that one time I forgot the baking powder, oops!) Your batter should be pretty thick, damp and sticky.
Mistakes can happen to us all and it is possible you have read one of amounts wrong. This recipe requires 2 cups of flour, 1 cup of milk, 1 stick of butter, melted plus baking powder, sugar and salt. Hope that helps!
What am I doing wrong? I made two different batches and they both burned. The tops were barely light brown and the bottom was burned. I put them in for the minimum time.
I’m so sorry that these didn’t work out for you. I’ve never had the problem with the bottoms getting burned before the tops are done. It sounds like you may have an issue with your oven. I think this post might be helpful to get the root of the problem. Good luck!

I’ve been making these at least once a month for the past 2 years. Everyone LOVES them, they’re always fluffy and golden, they’re so easy. I figured it was finally time for me to drop a huge THANK YOU!
Didn’t have the ingredients for my quick drop biscuits so I did a search and found your recipe. I really like these biscuits! I love the size and the texture is wonderful. Thank you for sharing. I’m happy to share my recipe if you would like to try it. 🙂
So easy and delicious. The trick is definitely to get them in ASAP!
Made these for the first time today. They are the best! Very moist and fluffy. Used 1 1/4 tablespoons of sugar as you suggested which gave them a hint of sweetness. Will be my go to biscuit recipe going forward.
Omg these were amazing! I just used the 1 Tbsp of sugar and it was perfect for us. Thanks for this awesome recipe!

I am so sorry to hear this has happened to you! Every oven is different so it may be your oven temperature. One thing that also might do this is if you are putting these on the bottom rack in your oven. I like cooking things like pizza crust that way so we get a crispier bottom. These biscuits are cooked at a pretty high temperature so that would be one way to get overcooked bottoms. These drop biscuits are a staple in our house and I haven’t had this happen to me so these are just my best guesses. 🙂 Hope that helps!
Mine burned in the bottom as well. I’ll probably lower the temperature next time. But the biscuits were delicious!
I absolutely Love these biscuits! I used spelt flour, and they still turned out great!!
Thanks for the recipe!
I have made these time and time again. They always come out so good. My family is constantly asking for them for breakfast lunch and dinner. They are perfect for eating with honey, honey butter, chicken, with jams or jelly… they are just perfect for eating! Thank you for this wonderful recipe! 🙂 <3
These are the best!! Thanks for a great recipe. I use them to make sausage gravy and biscuits. I actually bake them in my toaster oven, just adjust the time and temp. Perfection!!
This is my go to recipe for drop buscuits. I dont keep milk in the house and so I use water instead. Comes out great. Such great flavor. Very fast recipe to make too.
These buiscits were absolutely delicious. I followed the instructions to the T and they came out so well… Simple and delicious. I also tried adding chives and cheese and wow !
These biscuits were easy to make and ready in minutes! So delicious too!
I’m a lazy baker and I’ve been making these delicious drop biscuits for years! I’ve made them vegan, I’ve made them with half and half, with blueberries, with vanilla, with chocolate chips… they are always so good! I’ve done less sugar if we’re eating them for dinner or up to 3 tablespoons with breakfast/snack. I can’t get over how adaptable they are, especially since they’re so easy to make. They even freeze and thaw well!!
If theses are made using the exact recipe, one word, PERFECTION
Mine came out absolutely flat…like another commenter said…like cookies. I know I did not miss anything, and I dropped them on the sheet AS SOON AS I mixed in the wet ingredients. The dough did seem a bit watery, bit I thought it was supposed to be as such (first time making…). I will try this again, and maybe sift my ingredients, as I feel like maybe my dry stuff didn’t get mixed as well as it could have, but I don’t feel like it should have made them THAT flat! They tasted pretty good, for the most part. (Any ideas on the flatness? My powder isn’t old…)
I’m so sorry to hear that they came out flat. Besides baking powder potentially being old, another culprit is over mixing. The only time I have had flat biscuits was when I forgot my baking powder because I was distracted by guests. I remembered after I already dropped them on the sheet. I scooped them back into a bowl, added the baking powder and dropped them again. Result was pretty flat biscuits. 🙂
I have never had watery dough however, so I wonder if something else went wrong? The dough is a bit sticky, but I wouldn’t call it watery. It is also possible the baking powder was no longer working, even if expiration date hasn’t passed. (You can check your baking powder by dropping a spoonful into a glass of water. If it fizzes, it’s still good. If nothing happens, it’s time for some new baking powder. )
I do hope you try again and get better results. These biscuits are so easy and pretty amazing. After making them several dozen times myself, I’ve only ever had them not turn out twice and both times were my own fault.
I’m so happy I found this recipe!!! These are THE BEST drop biscuits I have ever made! I have printed it out to add to my favorites recipe binder lol I live in high altitude so I added 2 TBSP of flour. They were perfect! So light and fluffy and just fell apart. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for sharing this recipe! This has been on repeat at my house and they are so freaking easy to make! We sub coconut oil and almond milk and the recipe still works great! This recipe is perfect! ???
