Fresh Michigan Asparagus
I love when asparagus season hits. My grocery stores offer asparagus from Michigan that is delicious and affordable. I’d much rather purchase produce that is local or from a neighboring state and this season’s crop has not disappointed. Delicious! You can use asparagus in a wide variety of dishes. Try an asparagus cheese tart for an easy appetizer or add asparagus to your next stir fry!
How to Store Fresh Asparagus
If you’ve ever wondered how to store your asparagus for optimal freshness, it is best to store your asparagus as they do in the grocery store: upright in a bit of water.
Simply cut a bit off your woody ends of your asparagus, just like you would for fresh cut flowers. No need to take your rubber band off your bundle.
Stand your asparagus bunch in a couple inches of water and cover them loosely with a small plastic bag before putting them into the fridge. I like to but them on my refrigerator door for the height and so my bundle doesn’t get knocked over.
Ingredients for Air Fryer Asparagus
To make this super easy air fryer side dish, you’ll need the following ingredients:
- fresh asparagus
- everything but the bagel seasoning blend
- freshly ground pepper
- sea salt
- olive oil
That is it! You can also serve with a side of lemon wedges or skip the extra sea salt since there is salt in the seasoning blend.
How to Cook Asparagus in the Air Fryer
Roasted vegetables have always been my personal favorite. Asparagus tastes simply amazing roasted. The air fryer will give you a great roasted flavor in half the time as your oven. That is why I love making air fryer potato wedges, too. Delicious taste in a fraction of the time. (Did you know you can even cook hard boiled eggs in the air fryer? Such a versatile appliance.)
To start, you’ll want to wash and dry your fresh asparagus then trim your woody asparagus ends. Next, you’ll want to coat them with your olive oil and spices. I find the easiest way is by putting my asparagus on a baking tray, drizzling with olive oil and gently mix around. Because asparagus is so long, a bowl makes it difficult to coat your spears.
How Long to Cook Asparagus in the Air Fryer
Too cook your asparagus you’ll need to preheat your air fryer. I like to cook my asparagus at 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Place your asparagus in a single layer in your basket or tray. No need to oil or spray with non cook spray since the asparagus already has oil coating it. I had to cook mine in two batches because I have a smaller basket style air fryer. How long to cook asparagus in the air fryer will will depend upon your personal preference and the thickness of your spears, about 4 to 6 minutes. I found 5 minutes to be perfect.
Don’t have an Air Fryer? You can roast your asparagus in the oven on a baking tray at 425 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes.
Homemade Everything But the Bagel Seasoning Blend
Don’t have Everything But the Bagel Seasoning? No problem! You can make your own at home. Just substitute the following for the seasoning:
- 1/2 teaspoon dried garlic flakes
- 1/2 teaspoon dried onion flakes
- 1/2 teaspoon sesame seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon poppy seeds
- 1/4 teaspoon sea salt
If you love everything bagel seasoning, I be sure to try this salmon and cucumber appetizer featuring smoked salmon, cream cheese and this seasoning!
