Ground Beef Casserole Recipe Ingredients

To make this delicious hamburger hash brown casserole, you will need the following ingredients:

  • Lean ground beef: I used two pounds of ground beef that was 85/15 but you can opt for an even leaner ground beef if preferred.
  • Green pepper: Bell peppers add a pop of color and a mild, slightly sweet flavor to the casserole. If you prefer a spicier kick, you can substitute it with a jalapeño pepper. –
  • Onion: A staple in most savory dishes, diced onions add depth and a subtle sweetness to the casserole. Yellow onions work best, but you can use white or red onions if that’s what you have on hand.
  • Can of corn: Sweet corn adds a touch of sweetness and a burst of vibrant color. You can also use fresh or frozen corn kernels if you prefer.
  • Sour cream: I love how it offers a creamy and tangy element to the casserole, enhancing its overall richness. You can substitute it with Greek yogurt for a healthier twist.
  • Cream of mushroom soup: This provides a flavorful sauce. If you’re not a fan of mushroom flavor, you can replace it with cream of chicken soup or even cheddar cheese soup.
  • Salt, black pepper, garlic powder: These seasonings are staples and elevate the flavors of the dish.
  • Fresh hash browns: This is a key ingredient offering its signature texture and heartiness. You also substitute frozen hash browns for convenience.
  • Butter (optional for browning the top of the hash browns): Adds a buttery and crispy layer to the casserole, enhancing its visual appeal and overall flavor.
  • Shredded cheese: Choose your favorite variety, such as shredded cheddar, colby-jack or a Mexican cheese blend. You can purchase already shredded cheese but shredding a block of cheese will provide the best results for melty cheese.
  • Green onion (optional): This is a great garnish that offers a vibrant touch to the finished dish, along with a mild onion flavor. You could also use fresh herbs like parsley or cilantro.

Can I use frozen hash browns instead of fresh ones?

Yes, you can!  While the recipe calls for fresh hash browns, using frozen hash browns is a great alternative, especially if you’re short on time or don’t have access to fresh potatoes. To use frozen hashbrowns, simply thaw them according to the package instructions and make sure to drain any excess moisture. This will help ensure that your casserole doesn’t become watery during baking. Once thawed and drained, the frozen hash browns can be used as a substitute for the fresh ones in the recipe.

What to Serve with Hamburger Casserole:

When it comes to serving a cheesy hamburger hash brown casserole, there are plenty of options to round out your meal. While this recipe does include some veggies, here are some ways to stretch your casserole further.

  • For vegetable side dishes, try serving roasted broccoli or air fryer asparagus. You can also sauté some zucchini or mushrooms for a delicious and hearty addition. If you are short on a time, a veggie tray with dip also works well!
  • If you prefer a lighter option, a crisp green salad or a tomato cucumber salad is always a good choice. You can toss together your favorite greens, along with some cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, and avocado. For an extra burst of flavor, drizzle some balsamic vinaigrette or creamy ranch dressing over the top.
  • For bread options, consider serving some garlic bread, drop biscuits or dinner rolls.  You can also opt for a crusty baguette or even sweet cornbread for a more rustic touch.
  • Consider offering various toppings with your hash brown and hamburger casserole. Some favorites include ketchup, salsa, hot sauce, sour cream, chopped jalapenos, diced tomatoes, fresh parsley or cilantro.

How to Get Crispy Hash Browns

If you love crispy hash browns, brush your hash browns with 2 to 3 tablespoons of melted butter before placing the casserole in the oven. You don’t need a lot to help them crisp up. If you use too much, they can become saturated, which may prevent them from getting crispy.  You can skip this step if you prefer softer, cheesy hash browns (as shown).

How to Store Leftovers

To store the hash brown with hamburger casserole, transfer the cooled the casserole into an airtight container. This will prevent any odors from permeating the casserole and maintain its flavor. It will stay fresh for up to 3 to 4 days. When it’s time to enjoy your leftover casserole, simply reheat it in a microwave-safe dish. Ensure the internal temperature reaches at least 165°F (74°C) to guarantee food safety.

Can I freeze the casserole?

Yes, you can freeze the hash brown casserole for later consumption. To freeze, cool completely and transfer the leftovers to an airtight container or wrap the casserole dish tightly with plastic wrap. For added protection, cover the container or dish with aluminum foil. The casserole can be stored in the freezer for up to three months.

To thaw, place in the refrigerator overnight. Once thawed, transfer the casserole to a preheated oven or microwave and cook it until heated through with an internal temperature reaches at least 165°F (74°C).

Can I prepare Hamburger Hash Brown Casserole in advance?

Preparing the hamburger hash brown casserole in advance is not only possible but highly encouraged to make busy weeknights a breeze. Prepare the casserole as written in the recipe card, but instead of placing in the oven, cover the casserole dish tightly with plastic wrap or aluminum foil.  The casserole can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.

To cook, preheat the oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and remove the plastic wrap or foil. Bake the casserole according to the provided instructions. Additional cook time will be needed and will vary, however look for visual clues of doneness and the internal temperature of at least 165°F (74°C).

    My kids LOVED this!!!
I am not kidding when I say that I had 5 empty plates.
The only change I made was use cream of potato soup instead of mushroom as two of my children have mushroom allergies. But other wise I made it exactly as written.
    SO GOOD 🙂
They all asked for it to be added to our monthly menu rotation.
